Whether it’s breakouts, flakiness, or just plain dull looking skin, and the massive amounts of caffeine intake and sleep deprivation, we’ve all been there. The stress of meeting deadlines can have a toll on one’s skin. But, have no fear, here a couple of tips and product suggestions that a can help your skin look healthy again.
1) Clean Your Makeup Off Before Bed
Now the one thing I understand as a student is that during those busy moments no one really has time for a full on skin care routine. Believe me I know, which is why, even though they aren’t the best skin care products and most skin care experts hate them, make up wipes are essential for the busy college student. If you use makeup wipes to remove your makeup, then make sure to cleanse your skin. Some of my favourite makeup white are The Simple Micellar Water Wipes, that come in the white packaging and the cult favourite: Yes to Cucumbers , they’re amazing and won’t strip your beautiful skin. We’ve ALL had those days where all you can fathom is a wipe before you pass out on top of your laptop.
However, a Micellar water is much more preferable because it’s just as effective. All you need is some cotton pads to wipe your face clean. Micellar waters are great because they work as make up removers but are extremely gentle and hydrating. My favourites include: the Simple Micellar Water, Bioderma (obviously), and Caudalie.
2) Cleanse Gently
Keeping the face clean is probably one of the most important things you can and should do to take care of your skin. On top of it just being hygienic, cleansing is also preventative. If you clean your skin well, your skin will take care of itself. Nonetheless, you need to take care of it well. Thus, you have to be careful not to use a cleanser that either strips your skin or doesn’t do anything at all. The best bet: a cleanser that is gentle but effective.
The Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser is profoundly gentle but beyond effective and will make your skin literally feel like a baby’s butt. It not only helped my skin texture, but also my acne. It’s brilliant for sensitive skin and for all skin types. If you want to take off makeup with it though (which is very important) I recommend a double cleanse. It is $18 USD so it might be pricey for some, so a good dupe is the Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash. It’s just as good, but the rosewater in the Glossier cleanser makes it just a bit better.
The Cetaphil Antibacterial Cleansing Bar is also brilliant for acne prone skin and it’s formulated for all skin types. Take note, this isn’t the typical Cetaphil cleanser everyone raves about. This is the black sheep of Cetpahil cleansers that is secretly amazing. I was weary of the soap bar formula at first, but after using it religiously for months, I’m in love. If you have dry skin, have no fear, the cleanser is formulated for dry skin anyways. For Oily skinned folks, the cleanser does not make your skin greasy at all, quite the contrary. This cleanser was recommended to me by my dermatologist and it is fantastic for those pesky breakouts. On the plus side: it’s inexpensive.
Hydrating your skin is just as important as hydrating your body and at many instances, they go hand in hand. No matter how oily your skin is or if you have acne prone skin, moisturizing is crucial. The more dehydrated your skin is, the more excess oil it will produce to accommodate. An excess amount of oil thus then causes those pesky painful pimples.
Since Glossier has been killing it lately in the skin department, one of my holy grail products is their Priming Moisturizer. While “prime” is in the name, you do not have to use this to just prime your skin before makeup, you can use it whenever. I’ve used it both in the morning and at night. The Glossier Priming Moisturizer is definitely a skin care primer and it will hydrate your skin beautifully. It is lightweight, jam-packed with hydrating ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, and much more and will NOT break you out. Formulated for ALL skin types, this stuff is a dream and I’m currently on my second bottle.
If you don’t want to order online or if Glossier is difficult for you to get where you are, no worries, I have another recommendation that may even be better than the Glossier (Yup, I said it). That is the Cera Ve Facial Moisturizing Lotion. They have a AM and PM one – the AM one with SPF 30 (also mega important – see below for more details). I use the PM one and oh. my. word. has this cream changed my life. Formulated with Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamides (which are amazing in minimizing pores) this moisturizer is amazing for ALL skin types, packs much hydration, is lightweight, and feels amazing on the skin all year around.
4) Use SPF
Applying SPF on your skin is extremely important. Let me tell you, if you ever visit a dermatologist, one of the first questions they will ask you is, “Do you wear any SPF?” If you want good wrinkle free non-damaged skin, wear SPF everyday. If you are acne prone or have acne scars of any kind, SPF is crucial. The sun will instantly darken scars and if you are using any kind of medication to help you with pigmentation, most creams have ingredients that make your skin extra sensitive to the skin, increasing your risk of skin cancer. This is why SPF is key.
My favourite SPFs are pretty much any sun cream from the La Roche Posay Anthelois range. If you are worried about breakouts from your SPF, La Roche Posay formulates one specifically for acne prone skin that sinks into the skin instantly. I believe they call it their Dry Touch Sunscreen at SPF 60. I prefer their Anthelios Cooling Water-Lotion sunscreen for Face and Body. It comes in SPF 30 and SPF 60. First, because it comes in a big bottle so you get more bang for your buck and second, because it feels like water on the skin, is cooling for those summer months (even though you should wear SPF all year around) and no joke, makes your skin feel SO SOFT. I never knew you could feel a sunscreen working, but after using La Roche Posay products, I can tell you that is definitely possible.
5) Spot Treatments
How to get rid of those pesky buggers on your face? Zap and nourish. A lot of spot treatments out there really dry out your skin so be careful. In order to know what kind of spot treatment will work for your skin, you have to know which ingredients work best with your skin.
A popular ingredient in many spot treatments is Benzyl Peroxide. Many people swear by it, but sadly, my skin reacts to it horribly. In the meantime, my skin LOVES Salicylic Acid. I’ve noticed that for many people, it is either/or. Feel free to look into spot treatments and find ones that work best for you. But the most important thing is that the treatment is gentle AND effective.
My holy grail? The Avene Cleanance Expert Emulsion Cream. This stuff is amazing and is gentle enough that you can use on your whole face and it won’t dry you out. I’ve also used it as a spot treatment. Another great all over the skin/gentle product you can use is the Fresh Umbrian Clay Oil Free Lotion. This stuff is so lovely, it won’t dry out your skin and works to purify the skin and balance your skin’s PH levels. However, an ingredient that is amazing and works for almost everyone is Sulfur. Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion, made popular by the Kardashians, is a Sulfur based treatment that works wonders. Now, it can’t be used all over the face, it definitely is a spot treatment, but sulfur works differently than other spot treatments, in that it kills the bacteria, drying out the spot, but it also nourishes and encourages skin rejuvenation making it all the more gentle for the skin.
